Animals Around The World

All around the world, from populated areas to far flung corners, there is an abundance of animals, both small and large.  There is a vast variety of both domesticated animals and wild animals living on the land and both the skies and the oceans are also filled with an abundance of different species.  While there are many animals which are widespread and found in many different countries, there are also lots of animals that have a specific habitat that they live in and so are unique to that area.     Animals from Around the World Asian Animals Asia is the largest continent in the world and as such it has a wide variety of habitats including forest and mountains and so there is a huge variety of animals which inhabit Asia.  From tigers to elephants to snakes, Asia is home to many different species of animals, including a number of exotic animals and also many which are endangered too.   The tiger and the Asian elephant are perhaps the better known anim...

Melanistic Animals

Most people probably think that black animals are pretty common, after all, there’s plenty of black dogs and cats around, but what about an animal that isn’t supposed to be black?  There are occasionally animals across a number of different species that are born black instead of their regular colour, and these are known as melanistic animals.     What are Melanistic Animals? Melanistic animals are the opposite of albino animals, which are white, and are animals that have too much melanin in their skin.  Melanin is the pigment that affects the skin, hair, and eyes.  The abundance of melanin then produces an animal that is either completely or partially black in colour.  Unlike the eyes of an albino animal, melanistic animals have regular coloured eyes.     Types of Melanistic Animals While many animals can be melanistic, there are also animals that cannot be melanistic.  Many domestic and farm animals - such as horses, cats, dogs, sheep...

Wild Animals

There are many millions of animals that roam wild across every continent and country in the world, from the fiercest predators to giants of the sea, to the birds in the sky, and even to the relatively ordinary.  Some of the most treasured sights that people can see are those of rare or fascinating animals in their natural habitat.   What are Wild Animals? Wild animals are animals that live in their natural habitat without the intervention of humans.  They are not domesticated in any way and are not fed or looked after or owned by humans.  They are animals that are free to roam where they please, forage or hunt for their own food and breed and raise their young when and where they want.  Wild animals do not interact with people on a daily basis and they maintain their natural fear of humans.   List of Wild Animals There are far too many wild animals to list, but here are some of the wild animals that you can find, from the birds in your back garden to...

Vertebrates

There are millions of different species in the world today - from the largest mammals to the smallest insects - and every single living being is classed as being either a vertebrate or an invertebrate.  95% of the animal population are invertebrates, compared to only 5% being vertebrates.   What is a Vertebrate? Vertebrates are animals that have a backbone.  The backbone, also called the spinal column, is formed by bones called vertebrae that protect the spinal nerve, hence the term vertebrates for animals that have a spine.  On the other hand, an invertebrate is an animal that does not have a spinal column or vertebrae.   Vertebrates have a skeleton that gives their bodies a solid form and structure and supports their muscles and organs.  They also have a developed brain, heart, eyes, and mouth.     Types of Vertebrates There are five main types of vertebrates and these are mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish.  These are al...

Prehistoric Animals

For millions of years animals have walked the earth, long before humans ever existed.  They are part of the history of the earth and there were many, many different species that roamed the land, the skies, and the sea.   What are Prehistoric Animals? Prehistoric animals are animals that lived more than 5,000 years ago and go right the way back many millions of years.  Although you would automatically think of prehistoric animals as being “dinosaurs” that is not strictly true as dinosaurs are actually a group of reptiles that were usually large and had hind legs that extended directly underneath their bodies.  However, prehistoric animals lived during three main periods in history.   They lived during the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic periods.  Up until the beginning of the Paleozoic period, most animals had lived in the seas.  However, during this period (600 million to 240 million years ago), animals developed that were able to live on land...

Hybrid Animals

For a long time many people thought that hybrid animals existed only in mythology, but in fact hybrid animals do actually exist in real life, and while there are many unique and fascinating animals around the world,  there are perhaps none quite so unique and unusual as hybrid animals.   Hybrids are animals that are produced by two completely different species breeding together, which produces the hybrid offspring.  A hybrid animal is also infertile in most cases which means that they cannot reproduce and therefore they are unable to create a completely new species.   It should be noted that they are completely different from a “cross-bred” or “mongrel” animal, such as you would find in dogs, for example, which is when two different breeds of the same animal produce offspring.   Not all species are able to create living hybrid offspring and many are born weak and die young.  However, species that are fairly similar - such as donkeys, horses, and zebr...

Endangered Animals

There are many millions of animals in the world and a vast variety of different species.  However, while the majority of animals thrive, there are a number of species whose numbers are in decline and are classed as being endangered.     What are Endangered Animals Endangered animals are species of animals that are at serious risk of dying out due to a declining population.  If that happens then they could become extinct which would mean that there would be none of those animals left in the world.  Animals are officially classed as endangered when there are less than 2,500 adults of that species in the world.   There are many reasons that a species could become endangered.  This could be through changes to their natural habitat through natural reasons such as a change of climate, forest fires, flooding or through the growth and development of humans and our construction of roads, buildings, business development etc.  Disease can also play a ...
